Stocks Opened Higher after Another Volatile Session

U.S. stocks opened higher on Friday after another volatile session a day earlier sent the three major indices tumbling anew. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately rose 103.31 points, or 0.38%, to 27,637.89. The S&P 500 added 14.22 points, or 0.43%, to 3,353.41. The Nasdaq Composite gained 57.09 points, or 0.52%, to 10,976.69.

Oil futures were mixed Friday, and remained on track for a second consecutive weekly loss as worries over the outlook for demand continued to weigh. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery rose 11 cents, or 0.3%, to $37.41 a barrel, while November Brent fell 6 cents, or 0.2%, to $40 a barrel.

US consumer prices increased for a third consecutive month in August and by a bigger than expected margin, as inflationary trends picked up after the height of the stay-in-place orders in the US. The Department of Labor’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.4% month-over-month in August to add to a 0.6% rise in July.

Peloton (PTON) wrapped up its fiscal year by reporting that sales and subscribers roughly doubled in the 12-month period. It reported fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $89.1 million, or 27 cents a share, on sales of $607.1 million, up from $223 million a year ago.
