Stocks Opened Mostly Lower, Weighed by Energy

U.S. stocks opened slightly lower on Friday, as selling in energy shares weighed on the main indexes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately fell 70.46 points, or 0.28%, to 24,741.30. The S&P 500 was down 7.85 points, or 0.29%, to 2,719.91. The Nasdaq Composite was up 2.58 points, or 0.03%, to 7,427.00.

Oil prices plunged on Friday as reports said OPEC and Russia are considering lifting production by as much as 1 million barrels a day to meet the shortfall in supply from Iran and Venezuela. West Texas Intermediate crude oil for July slumped $1.33, or 1.9%, to $69.38 a barrel. Brent oil lost $1.69, or 2.1%, to $77.10 a barrel.

Foot Locker reports that adjusted earnings per share came to $1.45 for the quarter, above consensus estimates of $1.25. The shoe store posted revenue of $2.03 billion, which also beat forecasts.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said on Friday it is recalling 4.8 million U.S. vehicles over a defect that could prevent drivers from deactivating cruise control and warned owners not to use the function until they get software upgrades.
