Stocks End Lower; Dow Turns Negative for the Year

U.S. stocks ended slightly lower on Tuesday, pressured by a slide in energy shares and worries over developments in Russia and Ukraine. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 9.44 points, or 0.06%, to 16,560.54 and turned negative for the year. The S&P 500 closed down 3.17 points, or 0.16%, to 1,933.75. The Nasdaq Composite shed 12.08 points, or 0.27%, to 4,389.25.

The U.S. budget deficit was $95 billion at the end of July, down 3 percent from the same period last year, according to data released by the Treasury Department on Tuesday.

A team of Boeing Co (BA.N) and Sikorsky Aircraft Corp and Textron Inc’s (TXT.N) Bell Helicopter have been selected to build prototypes of a multi-role vertical-lift aircraft as part of the U.S. Army’s plan to replace thousands of helicopters.

Shares of King Digital Entertainment (KING) plunged 21% in after-hours trade Tuesday after the game developer reported disappointing second-quarter sales and cuts its full-year outlook. For the quarter ending June 30, profit rose to $165.4 million, or 52 cents a share, from $125.9 million, or 39 cents a share in the year-earlier period.
