Stocks Rose with Energy Companies

U.S. stocks closed mostly higher on Tuesday as energy companies build on their surge from a day earlier. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 17.95 points, or 0.10%, to 17,938.28. The Standard & Poor’s 500 added 2.72 points, or 0.13%, to 2,112.13. The Nasdaq composite was down 6.96 points, or 0.14%, to 4,961.75.

Oil futures settled higher for a second straight session on Tuesday. July West Texas Intermediate crude rose 67 cents, or 1.4%, to settle at $50.36 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. August Brent crude on London’s ICE Futures exchange rose 89 cents, or 1.8%, to $51.44 a barrel.

U.S. consumer borrowing slowed in April, as Americans became more cautious about running up credit- card debt. Outstanding consumer credit, a measure of nonmortgage debt, rose by a seasonally adjusted $13.42 billion in April from the prior month, the Federal Reserve said Tuesday.

The global economy is increasingly vulnerable to a sharp slowdown as troubles in emerging markets mount and as advanced economies struggle to grow, the World Bank warned Tuesday.
