Stocks Trimmed Strong Gains to End Modestly Higher

U.S. stocks trimmed earlier strong gains and ended modestly higher on Thursday following big gains in global equity markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 33.20 points, or 0.19%, to 17,548.62. The S&P 500 added 4.63 points, or 0.23%, to 2,051.31. The Nasdaq Composite fell 12.64 points, or 0.26%, to 4,922.40.

The New York Stock Exchange said its nearly four-hour trading halt on Wednesday resulted from a technical problem that stemmed from new software rolled out the previous evening.
