Stocks Open Higher in Holiday-shortened Trading

U.S. stocks open higher on Thursday, as investors eyed the prospect of a fiscal aid package before the end of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately rose 41.76 points, or 0.14%, to 30,171.59. The S&P 500 added 8.95 points, or 0.33%, to 3,698.96. The Nasdaq Composite gained 42.25 points, or 0.33%, to 12,813.37.

Crude-oil futures headed lower on Thursday as light-trading volumes in the last trading session before Christmas left prices vulnerable to pullbacks amid concerns about whether a U.S. fiscal package will be signed into law by President Trump. West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery was trading 43 cents, or 0.9%, lower at $47.70 a barrel. February Brent crude was down 46 cents to reach $50.80 a barrel.
