Stocks Ended Mostly Higher after Soaring to a Record High

U.S. stocks ended mostly higher on Monday, after soaring to a record intraday high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 834.57 points, or 2.95%, to 29,157.97. The S&P 500 rose 41.06 points, or 1.17%, to 3,550.50. The Nasdaq Composite declined 181.45 points, or 1.53%, to 11,713.78.

Oil futures soared Monday, with U.S. prices tallying their biggest one-day gain in about six months, after Pfizer said its vaccine was much better than expected at protecting people from COVID-19 in a crucial study. West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery jumped $3.15, or 8.5%, to settle at $40.29 a barrel. January Brent crude surged $2.95, or 7.5%, to $42.40 a barrel.
