Stocks Ended Mixed, Oil Finished Higher

U.S. stocks ended mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average outperforming and the tech shares remaining under pressure, as investors reined in an initial wave of optimism over a promising vaccine candidate. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 262.95 points, or 0.90%, to 29,420.92. The S&P 500 was down 4.97 points, or 0.14%, to 3,545.53. The Nasdaq Composite fell 159.93 points, or 1.37%, to 11,553.86.

Oil futures finished higher Tuesday, building on the biggest one-day gain in more than five months on optimism over prospects for a COVID-19 vaccine, even as the continued spread of the disease undercuts fuel demand. West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery rose $1.07, or 2.7%, to settle at $41.36 a barrel. January Brent crude added $1.21, or nearly 2.9%, at $43.61 a barrel.
