Stocks Ended Lower Friday and Gained for the Week

U.S. stocks ended lower on Friday, but pared earlier loses, as investors parsed news that President Donald Trump revealed he had tested positive for Covid-19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 134.09 points, or 0.48%, to 27,682.81. The S&P 500 lost 32.36 points, or 0.96%, to 3,348.44. The Nasdaq Composite sank 251.49 points, or 2.22%, to 11,075.02. For the week, the Dow rose 1.9%, the S&P 500 added 1.5%, while the Nasdaq gained 1.5%.

Oil prices were hit Friday by news that President Donald Trump said he contracted coronavirus, adding to the industry’s concerns about rising cases of the disease worldwide which may dent demand for the commodity. West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery tumbled $1.67, or 4.3%, to settle at $37.05 a barrel. December Brent crude slid 4.1%, or $1.66, to $39.27 a barrel. For the week, WTI futures lost about 8% and Brent futures declined by 7.4%.
