Stocks Ended Higher and Gained for the Week

U.S. stocks ended higher on Friday and posted weekly gains, as investors monitored the prospects for another round of fiscal stimulus from Congress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 161.39 points, or 0.57%, to 28,586.90. The S&P 500 rose 30.30 points, or 0.88%, to 3,477.13. The Nasdaq Composite gained 158.96 points, or 1.39%, to 11,579.94. For the week, the Dow rose 3.3%, the S&P 500 was up 3.8%, and the Nasdaq climbed 4.6%.

Oil futures settled lower Friday following a reported end to a strike in Norway that threatened production. West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery fell 59 cents, or 1.4%, to settle at $40.60 a barrel, gained 9.6% for the week. December Brent crude fell 49 cents, or 1.1%, to $42.85 a barrel, rose 9.1% for the week.

The White House reportedly now intends to offer a stimulus proposal totaling $1.8 trillion, for a sum about $400 billion below the plan House Democrats voted to advance last week, according to outlets including Bloomberg and CNBC.
