Stocks Started September on a High Note

U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday, starting September on a high note, with the Nasdaq setting new closing high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 215.61 points, or 0.76%, to 28,645.66. The S&P 500 retreated 26.34 points, or 0.75%, to 3,526.65. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 164.21 points, or 1.39%, to 11,939.67.

Oil futures notched modest gains on Tuesday, finding support as some economic data show signs of recovery, boosting prospects for energy demand. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery rose 32 cents, or 0.75%, to settle at $42.93 a barrel, while November Brent crude settled 19 cents, or 0.42%, higher at $45.77 a barrel.
