Stocks Ended Mixed, S&P 500 and Nasdaq at Record Highs

U.S. stocks ended mixed on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closing at another round of record highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 60.02 points, or 0.21%, to 28,248.44. The S&P 500 added 12.34 points, or 0.36%, to 3,443.62. The Nasdaq Composite gained 86.75 points, or 0.76%, to 11,466.47.

Oil futures settled Tuesday at their highest since early March, as storms forced the shutdown of more than 80% of offshore crude-oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and prompted refinery cuts. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery rose 73 cents, or 1.7%, to settle at $43.35 a barrel. October Brent crude also gained 73 cents, or 1.6%, to $45.86 a barrel.

U.S. consumer confidence fell for second straight month in August as households worried about the economic outlook.The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index dropped to a reading of 84.8 this month from 91.7 in July.
