Stocks Tumbled at Open as Coronavirus Fears Escalated

U.S. stocks tumbled at open on Monday, as the escalating coronavirus crisis was taking a huge toll on financial markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately tumbled 838.17 points, or 2.89%, to 28,154.24. The S&P 500 lost 90.89 points, or 2.72%, to 3,246.86. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 314.40 points, or 3.28%, to 9,262.19.

Oil futures fell sharply Monday, dropping 4% as the spread of COVID-19 outside China underlines worries about a potential hit to crude demand. West Texas Intermediate crude for April delivery fell $2.14, or 4%, to $51.24 a barrel. May Brent crude was off $2.20, or 3.8%, at $55.74 a barrel.
