Stocks Opened Higher after Retail Sales Data

U.S. stocks opened higher on Friday, after data on retail sales rebounded to show growth in October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately rose 100.31 points, or 0.36%, to 27,882.27. The S&P 500 gained 10.94 points, or 0.35%, to 3,107.57. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 36.82 points, or 0.43%, to 8,515.84.

Oil futures edged lower Friday, as traders focus on signs of ample crude supply. West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery were off 10 cents or 0.2%, at $56.67 a barrel, while January Brent crude declined 32 cents, to $61.96 a barrel.

Retail sales increased 0.3% last month, the government said Friday. Sales at gas stations, car dealers and internet stores such as Amazon rose in October, but most other retailers posted weak results just before the start of the critical holiday shopping season.
