Stocks Edged Higher at Open ahead of Trump Speech

U.S. stocks edged higher at open on Tuesday, ahead of a speech by President Donald Trump that is expected to provide further insights on progress toward a partial U.S.-China trade deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately rose 20.36 points, or 0.07%, to 27,711.85. The S&P 500 advanced 6.57 points, or 0.21%, to 3,093.58. The Nasdaq Composite added 16.75 points, or 0.20%, to 8,481.03.

Oil futures rose higher on Tuesday morning as investors awaited insights on progress in trade talks between China and the U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery added 12 cents, or 0.2%, at $56.98 a barrel, while January Brent crude picked up 26 cents, or 0.3%, to $62.34 a barrel.

President Trump will speak at the Economic Club of New York at noon ET, where he could provide the latest update on Sino-American trade talks amid renewed concerns that the phase-one trade deal may not involve a rollback of existing tariffs.

Dean Foods Co. (DF) has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, with the dairy company saying it was working toward an “orderly” sale of the company.
