Stocks Rose Friday and Ended Down for the Week

U.S. stocks finished sharply higher on Friday, but still ended down for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 306.62 points, or 1.20%, to 25,886.01. The S&P 500 gained 41.08 points, or 1.44%, to 2,888.68. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 129.38 points, or 1.67%, to 7,895.99. For the week, however, the Dow finished 1.5% lower, the S&P 500 ended down 1%, while the Nasdaq retreated 0.8%.

Oil futures finished higher Friday, as traders weighed weakening demand against supply uncertainties linked to the Middle East and OPEC production. West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery rose 40 cents, or 0.7%, to settle at $54.87 a barrel. October Brent crude added 41 cents, or 0.7%, to $58.64 a barrel.

Shares of Nvidia (NVDA) jumped after the major graphics processing units chipmaker reported a shallower year-over-year decline in quarterly revenue than expected after-the-bell Thursday.
