Stocks Ended Higher, Recovering Some Losses

U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday, recovering some of Monday’s losses after China’s central bank fixed its yuan at a stronger-than-expected level.The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 311.78 points, or 1.21%, to 26,029.52. The S&P 500 added 37.03 points, or 1.30%, to 2,881.77. The Nasdaq Composite gained 107.23 points, or 1.39%, to 7,833.27 points.

Oil futures prices closed sharply lower Tuesday, as contracts gave up early gains once the stock market pared its recovery. West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery was down $1.06, or 1.9%, to $53.63 a barrel. October Brent crude fell 87 cents, or 1.4%, at $58.94 a barrel.

Disney (DIS) reported third-quarter results that missed consensus expectations. Here were the main numbers from the report, versus Bloomberg-compiled data: Revenue: $20.25 billion vs. $21.44 billion expected; Adj. earnings: $1.35 per share, vs. $1.71 per share expected.

Industrial materials maker DuPont is considering a sale of its nutrition and biosciences unit, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The unit, which supplies everything from soy-based food ingredients to tablet binders, could be worth at least $20 billion as a standalone entity, Bloomberg said.
