Stocks Ended Mixed Friday, Gained for the Week

U.S.stocks ended mixed on Friday, amid news reports and comments from White House advisers suggesting the two sides remain far from a deal. The Dow Industrial Average fell 63.20 points, or 0.25%, to 25,106.33. The S&P 500 was up 1.83 points, or 0.07%, to 2,707.88. The Nasdaq Composite fell 9.85 points, or 0.14%, to 7,298.20. For the week, the Dow added 0.2%, the S&P 500 edged up 0.1% and the Nasdaq advanced 0.5%.

Oil futures were stuck in a tight trading range Friday, with the U.S. benchmark ending slightly higher but suffering a weekly loss of nearly 5%. U.S. benchmark March West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 8 cents, or 0.2%, to settle at $52.72 a barrel.International benchmark April Brent added 47 cents, or 0.8%, to $62.10 a barrel.

The University of California will soon be granted a potentially valuable patent on the revolutionary gene-editing technology known as CRISPR, according to a document filed by the U.S. patent office on Friday.
