Stocks Opened Modestly Higher

U.S. stocks opened modestly higher on Thursday as investors continue to process trade war progress. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately rose 52.25 points, or 0.21%, to 24,579.52. The S&P 500 gained 4.63, or 0.17%, to 2,655.70. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 7.91 points, or 0.11%, to 7,106.22.

Oil prices fell Thursday as market doubts for the efficacy of planned production cuts were renewed. West Texas Intermediate crude for January delivery slipped 16 cents, or 0.3%, to $50.99 a barrel. February Brent crude shed 13 cents, or about 0.2%, to $60.02 a barrel.

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits plunged by 27,000 in early December to 206,000. New applications for unemployment benefits fell to a seasonally adjusted 206,000 from 233,000 in the seven days ended Dec. 8.

General Electric Co (GE) on Thursday said its digital unit would sell a majority stake in ServiceMax, a cloud-based provider of software used in inventory and workforce management, to technology-focused private equity firm Silver Lake.
