Stocks Opened Lower on Trump Tariff Comments

U.S. stocks opened lower on Tuesday, as remarks from President Donald Trump stoked fresh anxieties about the prospects of a near-term resolution of trade tensions between the U.S. and China. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately shed 187.94 points, or 0.76%, to 24,452.30. The S&P 500 was down 10.93 points, or 0.41%, to 2,662.52. The Nasdaq Composite fell 30.55 points, or 0.43%, to 7,051.30.

Oil futures were flat to slightly lower Tuesday, a day after they bounced sharply on hopes Saudi Arabia and other major producers will move to cut output when they meet next month. West Texas Intermediate crude for January delivery were off 15 cents, or 0.3%, to $51.48 a barrel, while January Brent crude was off 3 cents, or 0.1%, to $60.45 a barrel.

U.S. home price growth slowed for the sixth consecutive month. Standard & Poor’s said Tuesday that its S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller national home price index reported a 5.5% annual gain in September, down from 5.7% in August. The 20-City Composite reported a 5.1% gain, missing analysts’ estimates of 5.2%.
