Stocks Opened Slightly Higher, Earnings in Focus

U.S. stocks opened slightly higher on Monday, as investors looked ahead to this week’s deluge of third-quarter earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 98 points, or 0.4%, to 25,550. The S&P 500 was up 10 points, or 0.4% to 2779. The Nasdaq Composite rose 52 points, or 0.7% at 7,503.

Oil futures edged slightly higher Monday as traders took stock of U.S.-Saudi tensions over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery rose 2 cents to $69.14 a barrel. The global benchmark, Brent crude rose 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $79.89 a barrel.

Netflix Inc said on Monday it plans to raise about $2 billion in debt to fund original shows, acquire content and for possible acquisitions. The streaming giant said the debt will be in the form of senior notes denominated in U.S. dollars and euros.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV agreed to sell its car-parts unit, Magneti Marelli, to KKR & Co.’s Calsonic Kansei in the first major deal for the Italian-American carmaker under new Chief Executive Officer Mike Manley.
