Stocks Opened Lower to Kick off September Trading

U.S. stocks opened lower on Tuesday, the first trading day in September, as investors worried about trade negotiations between United States and other major economies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately fell 112.45 points, or 0.43%, to 25,852.37. The S&P 500 was down 9.23 points, or 0.32%, to 2,892.29. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 41.05 points, or 0.51%, , to 8,068.49.

Oil futures climbed early Tuesday in New York, amid a looming tropical storm off the Gulf Coast and concerns about risks to Iranian supply from U.S. economic sanctions. October West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.18, or 1.7%, at $70.97 a barrel. November Brent gained $1.01, or 1.3%, at $79.15.

Ford Motor Co reported a nearly 4.1 percent rise in U.S. auto sales in August, helped by higher demand for its sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. It sold 223,055 vehicles in August, compared with 227,625, a year earlier.
