Stock Opened Slightly Higher, Tech Shares Gained

U.S. stocks opened slightly higher on Wednesday, with help from technology stocks, as investors awaited progress on trade talks between the United States and Canada. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately fell 14.87 points, or 0.06%, to 26,049.15. The S&P 500 added 2.47 points, or 0.09%, to 2,899.99. The Nasdaq Composite gained 19.99 points, or 0.25%, to 8,050.03.

Crude-oil prices early Wednesday edged slightly higher after industry group data showed that supplies barely budged in the prior week. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery tacked on 25 cents, or 0.4%, at $68.78 a barrel. Brent crude traded 18 cents higher, or 0.2%, to $76.47 a barrel.

U.S. economic growth was a bit stronger than initially thought in the second quarter. Gross domestic product increased at a 4.2 percent annualized rate, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday.

Dick’s Sporting Goods reported less-than-expected sales during the second quarter. The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.20, compared with $1.06 expected.

Facebook Inc. is launching Watch, its video rival to YouTube, internationally and expanding the financial incentives that encourage people to share their content there.
