Stocks Ended Mostly Lower, Off Session Lows

U.S. stocks ended mostly lower, but off session lows on Thursday as strong economic data offset disappointing earnings reports from several companies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 5.17 points, or 0.02%, to 23,930.15. The S&P 500 lost 5.94 points, or 0.23%, to 2,629.73. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 12.75 points, or 0.18%, to 7,088.15.

Oil finished higher Thursday for a second day, as traders worried that a potential U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, and the International Monetary Fund’s threat to expel Venezuela, will lead to tighter global crude supplies. June West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 50 cents, or 0.7%, to settle at $68.43 a barrel. July Brent added 26 cents, or 0.4%, to $73.62 a barrel.

GoPro Inc. (GPRO) reported a first-quarter net loss of $76.3 million, or 55 cents a share, on sales of $202.3 million, down from $218.6 million a year ago. After adjustments for stock-based compensation and other effects, GoPro claimed a loss of 34 cents a share, an improvement from last year’s adjusted loss of 44 cents a share.
