Stocks Ended Lower on Fresh Trade War Fears

U.S. stocks ended broadly lower on Thursday after the United States moved to impose tariffs on metal imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 251.94 points, or 1.02%, to 24,415.84. The S&P 500 lost 18.74 points, or 0.69%, to 2,705.27. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 20.34 points, or 0.27%, to 7,442.12. May was still positive for equities, with the Dow booking a 1.1% monthly rise, the S&P 500 gaining 2.2% and the Nasdaq Composite advancing 5.3%.

U.S. oil prices settled lower Thursday, pressured by unexpected increases in U.S. petroleum-product stockpiles, ongoing growth in domestic crude output and uncertainty surrounding OPEC’s plans for production. July West Texas Intermediate crude fell $1.17, or 1.7%, to settle at $67.04 a barrel. July Brent crude rose 9 cents, or 0.1%, to $77.59 a barrel.
