Stocks Ended Mostly Lower, Dow Rose

U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Thursday, as uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump’s protectionist stance on trade policy weighed on sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 115.54 points, or 0.47%, to 24,873.66. The S&P 500 lost 2.15 points, or 0.08%, to 2,747.33. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 15.07 points, or 0.20%, to 7,481.74.

Oil prices ended higher on Thursday, buoyed by signs of growing global crude demand, but concerns surrounding surging U.S. shale production kept gains in check. April West Texas Intermediate futures tacked on 23 cents, or 0.4%, to settle at $61.19 a barrel. May Brent crude added 23 cents, or 0.4%, to $65.12 a barrel.

Chipmaker Broadcom Ltd (AVGO) reported a 28.7 percent jump in quarterly revenue on Thursday on strong demand for its chips from smartphone makers. Net income attributable to ordinary shares rose to $6.23 billion, or $14.62 per share, in the first quarter ended Feb. 4, from $239 million, or 57 cents per share, a year earlier.
