Stocks Opened Lower, Set to Extend Weekly Losses

U.S. stocks opened lower on Friday, extending the previous session’s decline and putting major indexes on track for weekly losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately slid 69.68 points, or 0.32%, to 21,681.05. The S&P 500 lost 8.28 points, or 0.34%, to 2,421.73. The Nasdaq Composite fell 21.40 points, or 0.34%, to 6,200.52.

Oil futures edged higher on Friday, finding a modicum of support from a softer dollar. West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery rose 17 cents, or 0.4%, to $47.26 a barrel, while October Brent climbed 12 cents, or 0.2%, to $51.15 a barrel.

Walmart on Thursday said food sales had grown to their highest level in five years, as Walmart expands its grocery business both in stores and online by adding more organic produce.

Foot Locker ‘s quarterly results missed expectations by a wide margin. The athletic apparel retailer posted adjusted earnings per share of 62 cents on revenue of $1.701 billion for the second quarter. Same-store sales fell 6 percent year over year.
