Stocks Ended Higher, Dow at Record

U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the Dow industrials closing at a record, powered by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and other banks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 72.80 points, or 0.33%, to 21,962.92. The S&P 500 gained 6.05 points, or 0.24%, to 2,476.35. The Nasdaq Composite added 14.81 points, or 0.23%, to 6,362.94.

Oil futures retreated Tuesday, with the U.S. benchmark slipping back below $50 a barrel on signs of a pickup in production by Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Light, sweet crude futures for delivery in September fell $1.01, or 2%, to close at $49.16 a barrel, while October Brent crude lost 94 cents, or 1.8%, to settle at $51.78 a barrel.

FireEye Inc. reported quarterly financial results that beat expectations and raised its projections for the rest of the year. The company reported a loss of $70.7 million, or 40 cents a share, on revenue of $185.5 million for the second quarter. With the beat, FireEye increased its full-year forecast to a range of $734 million to $746 million, after previously guiding for annual sales of $724 million to $736 million.
