Stocks Opened Mixed; Nasdaq Gained as Tech Shares Rose

U.S. stocks opened mostly lower on Monday, as modest gains in the technology sector pushed the Nasdaq Composite into positive territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately slipped 19.27 points, or 0.09%, to 21,395.07. The S&P 500 was off 0.17 points, or 0.01%, to 2,425.01. The Nasdaq Composite gained 6.09 points, or 0.10%, to 6,159.17.

Oil fell on Monday, adding to heavy losses at the end of last week due to rising drilling activity in the United States and no let-up in supply growth from both OPEC and non-OPEC exporters. Brent crude futures fell 51 cents on the day to $46.20 per barrel by 1120 GMT, while U.S. crude futures were last 49 cents lower on the day at $43.74 a barrel.

Shares of ClubCorp Holdings Inc. (MYCC) rocketed 31% toward a 4-month high in active premarket trade Monday, after the golf and country clubs owner and operator announced over the weekend a deal to be acquired for $1.1 billion by private-equity firm Apollo Global Management.

After fielding takeover offers, teen clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (anf, -12.80%) said on Monday it is no longer up for sale, and will instead focus on fixing the long ailing business itself.

COSCO Shipping Holdings Co Ltd saw its stock climb on Monday after bidding $6.3 billion for a Hong Kong peer, a deal that would see it become the world’s third-biggest container shipper and underline China’s supply-chain ambitions.
