U.S. stocks jumped to records at the open on Thursday, supported by the latest round of upbeat corporate results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately rose 51.53 points, or 0.24%, to 21,762.54. The S&P 500 climbed 1.48 points, or 0.06%, to 2,479.31. The Nasdaq Composite rose 21.45 points, or 0.33%, to 6,444.20.

Oil prices were holding steady on Thursday after fresh gains in the U.S. amid bullish weekly data on both supplies and production. Light, sweet crude futures for delivery in September recently traded up 6 cents to $48.82 a barrel. September Brent crude gained 5 cents to $51.04 a barrel.

Orders for durable or long-lasting U.S. goods soared in June to a three-year high, but the gain was mostly a mirage: a summer bonanza for Boeing accounted for nearly the entire gain. Durable-goods orders leaped 6.5% last month, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

In the quarter, Verizon added 614,000 subscribers who pay a monthly bill, including tablet customers, compared to an increase of 615,000 in the year-earlier period.
