Dow Ended at Record, Tech Retreat Weighed on Nasdaq and S&P

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record closing high on Monday, but weakness in large-capitalization tech and internet names pressured the Nasdaq and limited the S&P 500’s advance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 60.81 points, or 0.28%, to 21,891.12. The S&P 500 slipped 1.80 points, or 0.07%, to 2,470.30. The Nasdaq Composite fell 26.55 points, or 0.42%, to 6,348.12. For the month, the Dow gained 2.6% , the S&P was up 2% and the Nasdaq rose 3.4%.

Oil futures erased an early loss, surging into the closing bell as traders finished out July with the biggest monthly percentage gain since April 2016. West Texas Intermediate crude for delivery in September rose 46 cents, or 0.9%, to $50.17 a barrel. For the month, the U.S. benchmark advanced 9%. September Brent crude rose 13 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $52.65 a barrel and notched a monthly gain of 9.9%.
