Stocks Ended Flat after Touching Record

U.S. stocks ended flat on Monday, after the Nasdaq and the S&P touching a record high, as materials shares offset a rise in the energy sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 5.34 points, or 0.03%, to 21,012.28. The S&P 500 slipped 0.09 point, to 2,399.38. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.90 points, or 0.03%, to 6,102.66.

Oil futures tilted higher Monday, as comments from major producers hint at a possible extension in crude-output cuts beyond this year. June WTI crude tacked on 21 cents, or 0.5%, to settle at $46.43 a barrel. July Brent rose 24 cents, or 0.5%, to $49.34 a barrel.

Apple Inc.’s market value briefly topped $800 billion for the first time Monday, after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. disclosed it boosted its stake in the technology giant to nearly $20 billion in recent months.
