Stocks Ended Lower Friday, Posted Weekly and Monthly Gains

U.S. stocks closed lower on Friday, but posted solid weekly and monthly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 40.82 points, or 0.19%, to 20,940.51, gained 1.9% over the week and 1.3% over the month. The S&P 500 was down 4.57 points, or 0.19%, to 2,384.20, gained 1.5% over the week and ended the month 0.9% higher. The Nasdaq Composite was off 1.33 points, or 0.02%, to 6,047.61, gained 2.3% over the week and 2.3% ove the month.

Oil prices settled a bit higher Friday, on the heels of a fresh slide to one-month settlement lows, but still registered a second straight monthly decline. June West Texas Intermediate crude rose 36 cents, or 0.7%, to $49.33 a barrel. June Brent rose 29 cents, or 0.6%, to $51.73 a barrel.
