Stocks Ended Lower; S&P 500 and Nasdaq Booked Weekly Losses

U.S. stocks ended Friday’s session lower and the main indexes showed mixed weekly performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 8.83 points, or 0.04%, to 19,843.41 but booked a 0.4% weekly gain. The S&P 500 declined 3.96 points, or 0.18%, to 2,258.07 and closed the week down by less than 0.1%. The Nasdaq Composite was off 19.69 points, or 0.36%, to 5,437.16 and booked a 0.1% loss over the week.

Oil prices settled higher Friday to tally a gain for the week. January West Texas Intermediate crude added $1, or 2%, to settle at $51.90 a barrel. For the week, prices rose roughly 0.8%. February Brent crude added $1.19, or 2.2%, to $55.21 a barrel, with prices about 1.7% higher for the week.

Sumner Redstone plans to step down from Viacom’s board of directors in two months, retaining a non-voting role as chairman emeritus. The action takes effect after Viacom’s annual meeting February 6, 2017, the company said in a proxy statement filed Friday.
