Stocks Ended Mixed, Dow Edged Up at Record

U.S. stocks closed mixed on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up to a record-high close, as investors sought more clarity on the policy proposals of president-elect Donald Trump. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 21.03 points, or 0.1%, to 18,868.69. The S&P 500 fell 0.25 points, or %, to 2,164.20. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 18.72 points, or 0.4%, to 5,218.40.

Oil futures logged their lowest close on Monday since mid-September as traders continued to cast doubts on the odds of a production cut later this month by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. December West Texas Intermediate crude fell by 9 cents, or 0.2%, to settle at $43.32 a barrel. January Brent crude lost 32 cents, or 0.7%, to $44.43 a barrel.

Apparel maker Gildan Activewear Inc. said it agreed to buy intellectual property rights related to the retailer American Apparel, which the Canadian company also said had filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday.
