Stocks Closed Lower after FBI Restarted Probe into Clinton Emails

U.S. stocks closed lower on Friday, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced it is investigating new emails related to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 8.49 points, or 0.05%, to 18,161.19. The S&P 500 was off 6.63 points, or 0.31%, atto 2,126.41. The Nasdaq Composite was down 25.87 points, or 0.50%, to 5,190.10. For the week, the S&P 500 ended off 0.7%, the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.3%, while the Dow industrials ended little-changed.

The FBI is restarting a probe into Hillary Clinton’s emails after finding more messages that “appear to be pertinent,” Director James Comey told members of Congress on Friday.

Oil futures finished lower Friday and booked its first weekly loss since the middle of September, as uncertainty surrounded a weekend meeting of major oil producers who are expected to discuss a proposal to curb crude production. December West Texas Intermediate crude settled down $1.02, or 2.1%, to $48.70 a barrel. December Brent crude fell 76 cents, or 1.5%, at $49.71 a barrel.

U.S. companies are cutting merger deals at a record pace even though antitrust regulators have moved to oppose several recent high-profile combinations.
