Stocks Opened Lower ahead of Economic Data

U.S. stocks opened slightly lower on Wednesday as investors remained cautious as they waited for more economic data to gauge the Federal Reserve’s next policy move. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately slipped 21.37 points, or 0.12%, to 18,516.75. The S&P 500 was down 1.64 points, or 0.08%, to 2,184.84. The Nasdaq Composite was up 1.05 point, or 0.02%, to 5,276.95.

Amazon said it would start delivering meals from restaurants direct to customers in some parts of London, the newest entrant to an increasingly competitive market which includes Just Eat, UberEats and Deliveroo.

Activist investor William Ackman’s hedge fund took a 9.9 percent stake in fast-casual Mexican food chain Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (CMG), buying in after the once high-flying company was battered by food-safety issues.

Ford Motor Co. (F) said Wednesday it had its best-ever August sales in China, selling 96,450 vehicles in the month. That was up 22% from a year ago.
