Stocks Closed Slightly Higher ahead of Central Bank Meeting Outcomes

U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday ahead of outcomes of meetings from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 9.79 points, or 0.05%, to 18,129.96. The S&P 500 advanced 0.64 point, or0.03%, to 2,139.76. The Nasdaq Composite gained 6.33 points, or 0.12%, to 5,241.35.

Oil futures ended on a mixed note Tuesday, as traders weighed the possibility of a crude output deal following reports that Russia supports a one-year pact to stabilize prices. October West Texas Intermediate crude rose by 14 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $43.44 a barrel. November Brent crude lost 7 cents, or less than 0.2%, to finish at $45.88 a barrel.

Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) posted stronger-than-expected quarterly results. Adobe reported third-quarter earnings rose to $270.8 million, or 54 cents a share, from $174.5 million, or 35 cents a share, a year earlier.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) said its head of consumer health care, Emma Walmsley, will succeed Andrew Witty as chief executive, in a move that cementsthe company’s shift away from its dominant prescription-medicine business.
