Stocks Opened Flat as August Began

U.S. stocks opened little changed on Monday as the market’s expectations of a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike this year appeared to wane. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately added 34.09 points, or 0.18%, to 18,398.15. The S&P 500 was down 3.61 points, to 2,169.99. The Nasdaq Composite rose 7.66 points, or 0.15%, to 5,169.79.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC and Google-parent Alphabet Inc. have teamed up to develop what they call bioelectronic medicines, or treatments that use miniature electronic devices to modify how electrical impulses are transmitted around the nervous system.

Crude-oil prices kicked off August with choppy trade as the persistent glut in crude and refined oil in the world continued to exert pressure on prices. Light, sweet crude futures for delivery in September CLU6, -1.80% fell 51 cents, or 1.2%, to $41.08 a barrel. The October contract of Brent crude dropped 58 cents, or 1.3%, to $42.95 a barrel.
