Stocks Opened Higher as Oil Prices Rose

U.S. stocks opened higher on Wednesday as crude oil prices rose for the fourth day in a row. The Dow Jones industrial average lately rose 143.24 points, or 0.85%, to 16,933.43. The S&P 500 gained 15.73 points, or 0.79%, to 1,995.65. The Nasdaq composite added 34.17 points, or 0.72%, to 4,782.53.

Oil prices rose on Wednesday after data showed the U.S. market was beginning to tighten, with falling supply and lower inventories after two years of heavy surplus. Brent was up 90 cents a barrel at $52.82 by 0835 GMT.

Anheuser-Busch InBev increased the pressure on SABMiller on Wednesday to agree to a takeover, saying that it was now willing to pay about $104 billion for its rival.

Monsanto Co, one of the world’s largest seed and agrichemical companies, said on Wednesday that it was slashing 2,600 jobs and restructuring operations to cut costs in a slumping commodity market that it expects to squeeze results well into 2016.

Airbus Group SE and Bombardier Inc. said late Tuesday that talks between the two jet makers over possible “business opportunities” have ended. The collapsed talks are potentially a big blow for Bombardier.

Three scientists have been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry for mapping out how cells repair damaged DNA, which is used for developing new cancer treatments.
