Stocks Ended Slightly Lower on Mixed Earnigs

U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday as investors grappled with mixed earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 13.43 points, or 0.08%, to 17,217.11. The S&P was off 2.89 points, or 0.14%, to 2,030.77. The Nasdaq Composite was down 24.50 points, or 0.50%, to 4,880.97.

Yahoo Inc. reported a disappointing 6.8% increase in revenue for the September and announced a search-advertising agreement with Google Inc. For the quarter ended in September, the company’s revenue rose to $1.226 billion from $1.148 billion, falling below the average analyst estimate of $1.256 billion on Thomson Reuters.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.’s sales growth continued to slow in the third quarter, as the company also reported weaker-than- expected profit. For the period ended Sept. 30, Chipotle reported earnings of $144.9 million, or $4.59 a share, up from $130.8 million, or $4.15 a share, a year earlier.

Advanced fuel-saving technology and digital multimedia systems in vehicles, including the Tesla (TSLA.O) Model S sedan, are hurting reliability, Consumer Reports magazine found on Tuesday in its annual survey of vehicle reliability.
