Stocks Closed with Small Gains

U.S. stocks finished Monday’s range-bound session marginally higher, as steep losses for energy stocks, following a drop in oil prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 14.57 points, or 0.08%, to 17,230.54. The S&P 500 was up 0.55 point, or 0.03%, to 2,033.66. The Nasdaq Composite gained 18.78 points, or 0.38%, to 4,905.47.

International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) reported its 14th consecutive fall in quarterly revenue and also fell short of analysts’ estimates, hurt by a strong dollar and the sale of low-margin businesses.

Oil futures settled at the lowest level in more than two weeks Monday. November West Texas Intermediate crude fell $1.37, or 2.9%, to settle at $45.89 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, ahead of the contract’s expiration on Tuesday.

Oprah Winfrey will buy 10 percent of Weight Watchers International Inc. and join its board, giving the struggling provider of weight-loss programs a jolt of star power as it works to fend off cheaper digital rivals.
