Stocks Ended Slightly Lower

U.S. stocks closed with small losses on Thursday, weighed by continuing worries about Greece, concerns about potential U.S. interest-rate hikes and a slide by Chinese stocks. The Dow industrials shed 36.87 points, or 0.20%, to 18,126.12. The S&P 500 lost 2.69 points, or 0.13%, to 2,120.79. while the Nasdaq Composite fell 8.62 points, or 0.17%, to 5,097.98.

Avago Technologies Inc. on Thursday agreed to buy Irvine semiconductor developer Broadcom Corp. for $37 billion in cash and stock, one the largest deals in the history of the semiconductor industry.

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is expanding its line-up of private-label brands into food and household items, according to a Dow Jones Newswires news story citing sources familiar with that plan.

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. has begun layoffs that are expected to total more than 5,000 by next year, people familiar with the matter said. This latest phase of cuts started earlier this year and would eliminate at least 2% of the bank’s workforce over the next year.
