Stocks End Mostly Lower as Energy Overshadows Yahoo

U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Monday as declines in energy companies along with oil prices overshadowed a rally by Yahoo! Inc. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 25.94 points, or 0.15%, to 17,111.42. The Standard & Poor’s 500 lost 6.17 points, or 0.31%, to 2,001.54. The Nasdaq composite gained 9.39 points, or 0.20%, to 4,592.29.

Consumer borrowing in the U.S. rose more than forecast in July as non-revolving loans including those for cars climbed by the most in three years. The $26 billion increase in credit and exceeded the highest forecast in a Bloomberg survey and followed an $18.8 billion advance in June that was more than previously estimated, a report from the Federal Reserve in Washington showed today.

Investors expect the U.S. Federal Reserve to keep interest rates lower for longer, and to raise them more slowly, than the makers of U.S monetary policy themselves expect, according to research published Monday by the San Francisco Fed.
