Stocks Closed Sharply Lower; Dow in Triple-digit Loss

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Tuesday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling by the most points in more than a month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 119.13 points, or 0.70%, to 16,818.13.  The S&P 500 was down 12.63 points, or 0.64%, to 1,949.98. The Nasdaq Composite fell 18.32 points, or 0.42%, to 4,350.36.

Home prices rose in April as the spring selling season got underway, even as annual growth skidded, dropping to the slowest year-over-year pace in 13 months, according to data released Tuesday morning.

EBay Inc. said Tuesday that it hired former International Business Machines Corp. executive Craig Hayman to lead its enterprise business.

Polling company Gallup issued a report Monday showing that a decisive majority of Americans-62 percent- say that social media has no influence on their purchasing decisions.
