Stocks Opened Higher; Caterpillar Lifted Dow

U.S. stocks edged higher in early trade on Monday, as Wall Street looked to rebound from last week’s big selloff. The Dow lately rose 47.07 points, or 0.30%, to 15,926.18. The S&P 500 added 3.53 points, or 0.20%, to 1,793.82. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.14 points, or 0.03%, to 4,127.04.

Caterpillar Inc posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit on Monday. It reported a fourth-quarter profit of $1 billion, or $1.54 a share, up from $697 million, or $1.04 a share, in the fourth quarter of 2012. Revenue fell 10 percent to $14.4 billion.

AT&T Inc. (T) said in a statement on Monday that it has no intention to make an offer for Vodafone PLC. AT&T said it was responding to recent speculation over a deal involving Vodafone and recent movement in those shares.

Google Inc said on Sunday it had agreed to acquire privately held artificial intelligence company DeepMind Technologies Ltd. Technology news website Re/code, which reported news of the deal earlier, said the price was $400 million, without disclosing where it got the information.
