Stocks Down Sharply, Google Buying Nest Labs

U.S. stocks fell on Monday on caution ahead of an onslaught of corporate results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
fell 179.1 points or 1.09% to 16,257.94. The S&P 500 closed 23.17 points or 1.26% lower at 1,819.20. The Nasdaq
Composite finished 61.36 points or 1.47% down at 4,113.30,

Google Inc (GOOG) on Monday announced plans to acquire Nest Labs Inc, a maker of smart thermostats and smoke
alarms, for $3.2 billion, one of the Internet search company’s largest acquisitions.

The U.S. government recorded a record budget surplus of $53 billion in December, the Treasury Department reported
Monday, helping to bring the government’s deficit down 41% in the first quarter of fiscal 2014.

More than half of the almost 2.2 million people who bought health insurance on federal and state exchanges in the
last three months are older than 45, records released Monday show
