Dow, S&P 500 End Slightly Higher

The Dow and S&P 500 ended modestly higher on Wednesday as Republicans and Democrats in Congress
said they saw signs of hope for a break in the fiscal impasse in the ninth day of government
shutdown. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 26.45 points, or 0.18%, to 14,802.98. The S&P 500
rose 0.95 point, or 0.06%, to 1,656.40. The Nasdaq Composite fell 17.06 points, or 0.46%, to
3,677.78.

Most members of the Federal Reserve still thought that it would be appropriate to scale back its
stimulus program this year, even as the central bankers decided to hold off moving in mid-
September, according to the minutes of the meeting released Wednesday.

President Barack Obama nominated Janet Yellen to be the next chair of the Federal Reserve Board on
Wednesday and said she is a proven leader who knows how to build consensus.

Nike’s key growth areas include China, women’s sports and e-commerce, and the athletic gear maker
plans to have $36 billion annually in revenue by fiscal 2017.

Global personal computer shipments fell again in the third quarter, though the top PC makers, led
by Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Dell Inc. each saw “modest” growth, IDC reported Wednesday.
