Stocks Opened Lower ahead of Powell Testimony

U.S. stocks opened lower on Tuesday with investors awaiting guidance on monetary policy from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell starting Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately declined 105.76 points, or 0.39%, to 26,700.38. The S&P 500 was down 8.30 points, or 0.28%, to 2,967.65. The Nasdaq Composite fell 13.09 points, or 0.16%, to 8,085.29.
U.S. oil futures were heading for a fourth straight advance in Tuesday trading. August West Texas Intermediate crude rose 30 cents, or 0.5%, at $57.97 a barrel. September Brent was up 35 cents, or 0.5%, to $64.46 a barrel.
International Business Machines Corp said on Tuesday it has closed its $34 billion acquisition of software company Red Hat Inc as it looks to ramp up its cloud computing business.
